History of Almerimar The Costa de Almeria region

The province of Almeria, situated in the south east of the Spanish peninsula, is bordered with the provinces of Granada and Murcia. It covers 8774 square kilometres with a population of 425,000 inhabitants, 145,000 of which live in the capital city, Almeria. This province is the hottest in Andalucia with an average of more than 3,100 hours of annual sunshine, lasting from well before Easter into November.

This is particularly noticeable in the area around Nijar. As the weather is so good Europe’s most powerful telescope has been installed here, on the outskirts of the small town of Gergal, along with a most important solar energy plant.

The natural protection of the mountain range of the Sierra de Gador also has resulted in the Almeria province being one of the most productive agricultural zones in Europe. It has more than 10,000 hectares of flowers and garden produce, much of it cultivated under plastic with a production volume of some 250 million kilos, 80% of which is exported with an estimated value of 22,000 million pesetas.

Marble is another of Almeria’s major export products and is famed for its luminous, unblemished appearance. Skiing in Almerimar.

The apartment is just 2 hours away from the great “Sky Station” ski village resort near Granada in the Sierra Nevada range reached through breath-taking scenery on top class mountain motorways.

The Ski resort has ski-runs going up to 3,300 metres altitude and a very attractive ski village with ample high quality accommodation at reasonable prices if you fancy staying over for a couple of nights.

In the Winter and Spring, one-day skiing excursions are quite practical and excellent fun – leave the apartment at 9 a.m. arrive at 11 a.m. - hire your skis - have an early lunch and be on the slopes with your half-day pass soon after noon.

Ski until 5 p.m. if you’re keen, have a nice relaxing apres-ski tea or something stronger and be back in Almerimar by 8 p.m. A nice warm shower – dress and be out before 9 p.m. for dinner in one of the best restaurants overlooking the marina for less per head than a Friday night pub meal in the UK.

The city of Granada is approximately 2 hours drive from our Villa In Almerimar with many attractions including the famous Alhambra Palace, Plaza Arquitecto García De Paredes 1 18009 Granada, Spain. +34 958 221 468.

The Alhambra, designed as the closest thing to a paradise on earth, is the most famous example of Moorish architecture. Modest materials were used - tiles, timber and plaster, but they were superbly worked into extravagant pieces of art.

The fragile, airy structure embodies breathtaking detail and celebration of a sensuous vitality.

Such was the exquisite beauty of Granada that both King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella chose it for their burial site.

It has suffered some decay, including an attempt by Napoleon's army to blow it up, but it has undergone extensive renovation that dazzles the eyes of all who visit.
